TOWN AND COUNTRY MATCH

FIN A L REPRESENT ATI VE TRIAL

The Anal trial to facilitate the selection of the South Canterbury representative side was played at Fraser Park on Saturday, when the Town team, minus Saxton, Morrison and Strang, met a Country side picked from the Walmate and Mackenzie SubUnions, and won by 17 points to 8. The Country forwards dominated play and kept the game tight in the second half. In the first half the Town backs treated a fair crowd to bright passing movements, but muci better work will be expected from the representative side. Town led 11-0 at the interval. The ground was heavy and both teams eased up in the second spell when the forwards took charge. The Country forwards were first to get going and they won the early scrums, Wright sending Lundy away. The first five-eighth tried to break through but was well smothered by Caln, but a moment later he went down the blind side with Smith, the wing being forced out inside the 25. Lundy put Country in a good attacking position with a kick to the corner, and after a series of scrums the ball came back to Wright whc threw a swift pass to Lundy. The Walmate man potted but his kick went low, Town forcing. Morrison turned the tables with a good kick to near Country's 25 and from a ruck Vucetich sent the ball back to Goodson. The whole Town back line handled in a rush which Hopkinson capped oil by side-stepping McKenzie and scoring wide-out. Cartwright’s kick missed narrowly. Town 3, Country 0

When Rollinson followed a high kick through lie bustled McKenzie and Goodson again set the backs in motion

but Cartwright missed his pass. Simpson, Greer and Ma hieson took play back to Town territory with a loose rush. Ryan broke away from the 25, going to past half-way before he was pulled down and Goodson whipped the ball out to McPh: 11 and Hopkinson, the latter galloping across ir the corner for his second try. Cartwright again failed to convert. Town 6, Country 0 The Town line handled well again but Hopkinson tackled by Lundy. Morrison came* up, however, to centre but the forwards infringed. Cartwright held on too long in a promising rush but a minute after' Ryan broke away in a strong dash to the 25, centring to Adkins who fielded neatly to score an easy try under the posts. This time Cartwright made no mistake. Town 11, Country 0 Good Concerted Work Adkins broke away from half-way after the Interval and sent infield to Goodson who handed on to Morrison. The five-eighth transferred to McPhail who sent Hopkinson down the line for a good try. Cartwright’s kick from wide out, missed. Towi 14, Country 0 The visitors opened their account a minute later when following a scramble close to the line Wright whipped the ball out to Lundy who sent Keenan over in the corner. Lundy failed to convert. Town 14, Country 3 Hopkinson retired with an injured nose and was replaced by Mallett. The Town backs were in motion again from a scrum the line handling well until Ryan was brought down by

Smith. Morrison came round and centred well, but Goulter cleared. The

Country forwards rorged upfield and when a kick by Rollinson rebounded a line out was ordered inches from the scoring area. Following a series of scrums the Town forwards cleared. I Lundy had a shot from a penalty which missed narrowly. Clever play gave the

Town side their next try. Ryan came in from the wing and burst through. He kicked to the far wing where Mallett gathered in cleanly and went over for a good try. Rollinscn’s kick missed. Town 17, Country 3 Country’s turn came when Bartlett dribbled through to inside the 25 where Smith came up and kicked over the line and rushed up to claim a try. HARRIS CUP

THIRD ROUND GAMES The third series of matches in the Soutli Canterbury Rugby Union’s Harris Cup competition was played on Saturday, when Celtic met Star at Fraser Park, as a curtain-raiser to the Town v. Country game, and Zingari were pitted against Temuka on the No. 2 ground at the Park. Geraldine won by default from Old Boys, in a game to have been played at Geraldine. CELTIC V. STAR The game had hardly commenced when Watson had to retire with an injured nose. He was able to resume, however, after attention. A possible chance went begging when Little, as a result of a Star attack, kicked over the dead ball line. A brilliant breakaway by O’Connell had the defence in difficulties and only that he held on too long a try would have resulted. Receiving the ball 30 yards out Ryan drop-kicked a neat goal. A solid Star attack was rounded off by Williams, who evened the score by the same method as the opposition. The game was more willing than scientific and Star suffered two casualties in quick succession, Farquhar and Burns being injured the latter being replaced by Dunnil. A scrum infringement against Celtic enabled Wilson to make an unsuccessful effort to convert. Play fluctuated a great deal, but the 25 lines were the extent of both sides' excursions. Fielding a stray kick. Solomon cut in, his pass, however, being intercepted, and Wilson ran 50 yards to score wide out. His attempt at goal was fruitless. The Greens were now playing with great dash, and attack after attack had Star defending desperately. Indiscriminate kicking among the forwards and lack of method in the play of the backs of both teams reduced the game to a mere scramble. Celtic had the upper hand in the last ten minutes, but missed many opportunities. Time was called with the scores: Star 7, Celtic 4. Mr L. K. Murray controlled the game. ZINGARI V. TEMUKA Temuka threw the ball about and had Zingari bustled. Within a few minutes O’Connor had an unsuccessful pot at goal, but Waters, following up fast, beat Zingari to it. Gilmore converted with a good kick from near the sideline. Several times the Temuka forwards had three men against the Zingari full i back, but In each case they fumbled. O’Connor failed with another attempt at a pot, but Gilmore added points with a try following a loose rush. The scorer converted. It was Temuka's half, but the better team were hard on the

defensive when O’Connor was caught in possession on his own goal-line. From a scrum the Zingari back line functioned, but the winger was smothered. A moment later Patterson potted a good goal. The best try of the match came early in the second half, when Waters broke up a Zingari back rush, passed to Coochey, who was overhauled in the opposing 25. where he passed neatly back to give Waters a clear run In. Gilmore goaled. Temuka kept pummelling at the line, but they kicked too hard and Zingari forced. Then Davis forced his way past four or five Zingari men and gave McCully a good try, which Gilmore narrowly failed to convert with a strong kick.

There was no holding the Temuka forwards, who by dribbling and short passing swept three-quarters of the field. Grant topped off the rush with a try, which Gilmore converted. Wilson followed with a try at the end of a back rush, and Gilmore added to his laurels with a magnificent kick from the side-line. The final score was: Temuka 28, Zingari 4. Mr S. A. Cox was referee. Hawke's Bay, was atrocious. The ground was sodden from heavy rain and a driving southerly blew all through the game. The attendance was seriously affected. Hawke's Bay won the toss, and elected to play with the wind at their back. Play was confined practically all to forward work. A high kick from the back was earned close to the line and Clothier touched down close to the posts. Bradly failed. This was followed by a pretty back movement, ending in a score by Apsey at the foot of the posts. Bradley converted: Another back pass saw Reeves dive across the corner, Dyer converting with a good kick on the side line. This was speedily followed by O’Brien barging through a forward rush under the bar, Bradley goallng: Wairarapa, keeping the ball at foot, rushed to the Bay goal, where, from an infringement Brunton goaled. Bay immediately rushed to the Wairarapa goal and Frazer emerged from a ruck near the poles. Bradley failed. With the wind In their favour, Wairarapa set up an attack and from

a back move Brunton crossed, but failed with the kick. Bay accepted two forces in quick succession, luckily averting scores. After a prolonged series of attacks. Bay emerged with a passing rush which broke inside the Wairarapa 25. Frazer picked up and bullocked across, Dyer goaling. Both sides were now heavily coated with mud. Bay, remaining on defence, accepted two forces in quick succession, then rushed play to the Wairarapa line, but the ball went dead. Wairarapa accepted two forces, and play returned to the Bay end. A period of give and take play, with fortunes either way, concluded a poor game. The final score was: Hawke's Bay 26, Wairarapa 6.
