HALSWELL RACE TIMARU RUNNERS DO WELL By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, July 1.7 D. H. Pannell (Christchurch) secured an undisputed victory this afternoon in the annual Halswell race, his lead being one of over 200 yards from the second man, L. Williams (South Canterbury) . Third and fourth places were taken by R. Taylor (South Canterbury) and W. Kennedy (Christchurch) respectively. The teams’ supremacy went to Christchurch with 17 points, with South Canterbury second, with 22 points. The race also decided the result of the inter-club (A grade) competition in favour of the Christchurch Club. Conditions for the race were bad. the ground being very heavy. A comparison of the times with those of last year is not possible, on account of course alterations. The Race The field set out briskly, but had only started to spread out when the first hill was encountered. Here the group at the front included Fox, Wayman, Pannell, Thornton and Mair. At the quarries, Pannell (Christchurch) had established a lead of 60 yards from R. Taylor (South Canterbury). Following were his two team mates. Squires and Williams. Sylvester (Methodist) , W. Kennedy and L. E. Fox (Christchurch), and Wayman (Methodist) were next, in that order. Running very easily, D. H. Pannell had increased his lead at the Drain Road corner to over 200 yards. Pannell had established his lead early, and at no stage did he have any challenge to resist. Results. — A Grade D. H. Pannell (Christchurch) ... 1 L. Williams (South Canterbury) . , 2 R.
