R. Anderson Jardine, who married the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, alleged that the Church of England had inspired the hostile United States forces to persuade American charities to abandon the sponsorship of lectures. He threatened to “blow off the lid and expose the real reasons” for the abdication, in his first speech at Baltimore on July 22. Mr Jardine added that a political alliance between Mr Baldwin and the Archbishop of Canterbury had forced King Edwards abdication leading to the disestablishment and disandowment of the Church.
