BARNETT HITS UP 100 IN AN HOUR

BOOST FOR BRIGHTER CRICKET C. J. Barnett, the young Gloucester batsman, made 83 not out for England against New Zealand in the recent Test at Lord’s. A fortnight earlier, he had made a gallant contribution to brighter cricket by smiting the Hampshire bowling for 100 in an hour. He hit four sixes and 12 fours—72 runs in boundary shots—in his score of 101.

This was the fastest scoring since Sir Walter Lawrence offered a trophy and 100 guineas for the quickest hundred of the season, three years ago.

Seventeen years ago, playing for Surrey against Northamptonshire, P. G. H. Fender was credited with a century in 35 minutes. The three previous winners of the Lawrence trophy were:

1934: F. E. Woolley completed 100 in 63 minutes, for Kent against Northants, at Dover. 1935: H. Glmblett, before he was 21 years old, and in his very first county match, reached the century in 63 minutes, for Somerset, against Essex, at Frome.

1936: L. E. G. Ames completed 100 in 68 minutes, for an England XI., against India, at Folkstone. These pale into significance compared with the feat of E. Alletson, for Notts, against Sussex, at Brighton, In 1911. Taking an hour to make his

first 50, he scored his next 139 runs in 30 minutes. He made 189 out of 227 runs obtained whilst at the wicket 90 minutes.
