WORK FOR THE WEEK
FLOWER GARDEN Cut over, lift, and divide up herbaceous perennials and dig the borders giving them a light dressing of superphosphate. All new plants should be acquired and planted without delay. Make cuttings of desirable trees and shrubs and when prepared insert them in a cool place so that they will grow and be ready for planting out by next autumn. Plant all manner of ornamental trees and shrubs and carry out ail intended alterations to shrubberies or lawns. (Prepare a rough plan of the plants required for summer beds so that seeds may be ordered before it is too late. Prepare the ground for Sweet Peas and sow two or three seeds in small pots or in pieces of turf about two inches square and place them in a cold frame or verandah, allowing them to get all possible sunshine during the day. VEGETABLE GARDEN Plant all manner of fruit trees and bushes and prune apples, pears, cherries, plums and bush fruits such as gooseberries, loganberries, and currants. All wounds over half an inch in diameter should be coated with tar to keep out the spores of Silver Blight and other diseases. Spray with winter washes to control pests and diseases. Thorough digging, liberal manuring, and scrupulous cleansing are of the utmost importance if good crops are to be expected in the growing season. Burn all rubbish, cabbage stems, prunings, etc., and place the ashes on the compost heap. Turn the compost heap periodically at the same time giving it a dressing of lime. Sow lettuce and spinach in sheltered borders or in frames. If they are damaged by frost sow again, it is worth some risk to achieve fresh green vegetables in early spring. Draw up a rough cropping plan to provie’e successional supplies and despatch the vegetable seed order as soon as possible to avoid disappointment as the best varieties are usually the first to be sold out.
