A RAINBOW BALL
Do you want to make a rainbow ball for the Christmas Ship? Well, here is one way this jolly plaything may be made. First of all you need a ball of variegated wool or small balls of coloured wool and a pair of steel needles. Cast on 18 stitches and knit plain. Increase one at the end of every row until 36 stitches are on. Then decrease in the same way until 18 stitches remain. Repeat five times (six sections) and sew up one end. Stuff with cotton wool or soft rags, and, if you wish, a pill box with two or three tiny stones can be placed inside to make a rattle. Sew a piece of elastic on the top when the ball is made, and you have a splendid toy for very-small people. HOW JAPAN GOT ITS NAME Japan is a word seldom heard in the land Itself. The Japanese name for the country is Niphon or Nippon, which means "land of the rising sun." Our word, Japan, is the result of a mistake made in spelling by early travellers to the East.
