SUPREME COURT
CHRISTCHURCH SESSION By TeieKiaph Press Association CHRISTCHURCH. July 16. For failing to stop after an accident, William Henry Tyler (25), was sentenced to one month's gaol, and prohibited from driving for five years by Mr Justice Northcroft in the Supreme Court this morning. “This case has caused a good deal of distress to me, for like most offenders for this class of offence, your intent was not criminally vicious,” said the Judge. “A deterrent is needed. As recently as last year the Legislature, voicing the demand of the public, made this offence much more serious than formerly, allowing for five years’ imprisonment.”
For making a false declaration under the Marriage Act, Arthur Middleton Leggett (48), carpenter, was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment by Mr Justice Northcroft to-day. The offence closely approximated bigamy, said the Judge, and was committed with the intention of facilitating a marriage.
“It is my duty to impose an exemplary sentence,” said Mr Justice Northcroft, in sentencing Richard John Hall, miner (51), to five years’ imprisonment for incest.
