SUCCESSFUL FIELD DAY On Thursday afternoon the South-turn-Lyaildale Young Farmers’ Club in conjunction with the Farmers’ Union held a demonstration at Mr H. W. Bishops’ property, Lyalidale, St. Andrews, on vaccination of ewes to ensure immunity from pulpy kidney in lambs. Mr James Stowell Introduced Mr E. J. Lukey, veterinary surgeon of the Department of Agriculture and apologised for the absence of Mr D. M. France (president of the Farmers’ Union).

Mr Lukey explained in detail the casual agent of barter'’, and how it caused the death of lambs from pulp kidney and also gave an outline of experiments in carrying out successful vaccination of ewes in order that the lambs would acquire a passing immunity. This was followed by a practical demonstration of the technique of vaccination of ewes supplied by Mr Bishop. During the afternoon tea session the vaccination of dogs to prevent distemper was fully explained. This proved most interesting, the speaker reviewing the amount of trouble experienced with dogs this season and many questions were answered. The 40 visitors too! ar enthusiastic interest in the day’s activities, and the complete success of the fixture augurs well for the future development of young farmers’ clubs in South Canterbury. Considerable assistance has been obtained in the matter of providing competent lectures, the Department of Agriculture co-operating freely. Mr Lukey was accorded a vote of thanks for his explanatory address and demonstration and Mr and Mrs Bishop for their hospitality. Among the visitors were Messrs A. Ward, J. Stowell, J. McKeown, R. A. Ward jnr, VISIT TO LINCOLN COLLEGE Seven members of the SouthburnLyalldale Young Farmers’ Club who leave on Monday for a week of courses at Lincoln College are Messrs R. Parry Jnr., I. Caird, J. Watson, W. Kinross. R. A. Coup, A. Ward jnr., B. Watson. EUCHRE TOURNAMENT The Increasing popularity of euchre parties was evidenced when a challenge match was played between Bluecliffs and Esk Valley at the Esk Valley School on Wednesday evening. Over 60 players spent a most enjoyable evening, the home team proving the winners. The prizes were won as follows. — Ladies, Miss Isobel Lund 1, Mrs Graham 2. Men: R. A. Coup 1, Mr A. G. Morrison 2. A special prize was presented to Miss Helen Bishop. At the conclusion of the cards a dance was held. Prizes for the Monte Carlo waltz were won by Miss Isobel Lund and Mr Jack Arnst. Music was played by Mrs L. R. Bishop assisted with extras by Mr George Borman, Mr W. Thomas was M.C. Prizes were kindly donated by Mr Ken Prattley.
