HANDS ACROSS THE TASMAN SEA
CLOSER RELATIONS WITH AUSTRALIA MINISTER’S APPEAL TO NEW ZEALAND United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received July 15, 10.40 p.m.) CANBERRA, July 15. Speaking at a luncheon given by the Commonwealth Government to the Hon. R. Semple, Dr. Earle Fage (Acting Prime Minister), said that within a comparatively few months, flying boats would bring Sydney closer by air to Auckland than Canberra was to Sydney. Dr. Page said he would like to see closer collaboration between the Australian and New Zealand Governments, in order to escape the traditional idea that the only place where Australian and New Zealand delegations might meet for full dress discussions, was in London. Mr Semple, acknowledging the welcome, said that the New Zealand Government was ready to meet representatives of the Commonwealth to discuss trade difficulties. He emphasised that the artificial barriers against satisfactory trade between the two Dominions should be broken down.
