NOTES The Port Waikato is due to-day from Dunedin to load for Auckland, via Lyttelton. The Karepo should be here to-day from Lyttelton to discharge coal, sailing the same day for Oamaru. The Waipahi, on the Wellington, Nelson and New Plymouth run, is expected to-morrow morning from Oamaru. The Breeze is listed to arrive on Sund-y from Oamaru. Advice has been received that the Kent is to leave Bluff at noon to-day and shoilld teach Tlmaru to-morrow to load frozen meat and general cargo for London and West Coast of England ports. She is up to sail the same day for Lyttelton. Motor Ship Construction In March, 22 large motor ships were completed and 26 were launched. These are the highest figures for any month for a considerable period. Last year’s output of big motor ships, according to the “Motor Ship," was 167 vessels of 1,075.000 tons gross. Completion of new tonnage, although being delayed in some directions, is accelerated in others, and it is anticipated that nearly 200 motor vessels, of about 1,300,000' tons gross, will be built this year. This is a higher tonnage than has been recorded since 1930, when 240 motor ships of over 1,600,000 tons gross were placed in service. An Ingenious Crew. When a ship in Arctic waters began to run low on fresh water recently, small boats were sent ashore and filled from snow-fed streams then towed back. Lacking a pump, the crew hoisted the boats on the davits and rigged a makeshift pipe by fitting together the ventilators gathered from various parts of the ship. The first was placed so that water would drain into it when a plug was removed from one of the boats, then the others were connected until the last was over the tanks. This arrangement permitted the fresh water to pass from boat to tank by gravity. NEW ZEALAND PORTS By Telegraph —press Assoclanop AUCKLAND. July 15. Sailed: Brisbane Maru (7.5 a.m.) for Wellington.
