Nash, although it offered opportunity for improving AmericanNew Zealand trade relations, naturally could not lead to a specific conclusion or commitments. The discussions now indicated that if and when circumstances were favourable for conversations, there may be satisfactory possibilities of fruitful and mutual beneficial results.

Mr Nash, in an interview, said he told Mr Roosevelt that a trade agreement between the United States and New Zealand ultimately would be achieved. He discussed with the President a variety of matters and outlined the progress of the trade treaty discussions with the State Department. An agreement could and must come. He invited Mr Roosevelt to visit New Zealand.

Mr Nash before leaving for Pittsburgh told the Australian Associated Press that President Roosevelt had promised to go to New Zealand when he had finished his job here. Mr Nash added that the State Department communique containded everything that could be published regarding the talks with President Roosevelt which had resulted in a general understanding of mutual problems. Mr Nash found the friendliest disposition toward New Zealand He lunched with Mr Henry Morgenthau (Secretary of the Treasury) with whom he discussed world problems. Mr Nash also conferred with the .hah-man of the Maritime Commission and the Secretary for Commerce. He will proceed to New York tomorrow. The date of his departure for home is uncertain because of the possibility of his returning to Ottawa the I'easoi? for which is not disclosed.
