HIGHLAND PIPE BAND
RECORD FINANCIAL YEAR ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS A very successful year was reported by the president, Mr Duncan Hume, r.t the annual meeting of the Timaru Highland Pipe Band, which was held on Wednesday. Annual Report The annual report recorded the resignation of Mr Alex. Rathbone, a very enthusiastic member of the executive, also Pipers Sutherland and Webber. Mr K. Simmons was elected to fill the vacancy on the executive. The year, from a financial aspect, was better than last year, the record year, the band being in a very satisfactory and sound position financially. Thanks were extended to the very energetic committee which succssfully organised and ran a Massed Bands' Display, which was a financial success, and to donors, well-wishers, and to band members in general for their untiring efforts during the year, also to the Drum Major and Pipe Major who had by their example and hard work brought the band to so high a degree of efficiency. To augment the funds the band organised a Massed Bands’ Display, inviting all the Pipe Bands in South Canterbury and the City of Christchurch Highland, and the Christchurch Caledonian Society bands to attend. The result was most satisfactory, and thanks were due to all visiting bands for their very able assistance in making the display the success it proved to be. The band was successful in its application to have the Dominion Championship Contest for 1937 held in Timaru. A citizens’ committee was set up and successfully rar. an A and a B grade contest, the second to be run in the Dominion, four entries being received for each grade. The band was successful in again winning the Dominion Championship for the second time in succession (a Dominion record) and the Dominion Championship Quickstep for the third year in succession (another Dominion record). They also won the Goulding Cup for the best dressed band for the second time in succession and were second In the Drum Major’s Display, truly a great record for any band. The following trophies were won by the band:—The Harry Lauder Shield, the Hunter Drill Shield, the Simon Wright Shield, the Goulding Cup, two gold medals and 24 silver medals. They also attended the provincial contest at Christchurch and gained second place, winning the Street March. The band had now complete uniforms for 20 pipers and seven drummers; all the kilts had been renewed and box-pleated, which added greatly to the appearance of the band. The band members were thanked for hearty co-operation during the year, and it was hoped that their efforts in the incoming year would be as well repaid as in their second championship year. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patrons: Mr D. Grant and the Mayor (Mr P. C. Vinnell); president: Mr W. Duncan; immediate past president: Mr W. D. Hume; vicepresidents: Messrs J. F. K. Jamieson, R. W. Munro. M. H. Richards, J. Weir, J. E. P. Cameron, T. Seaton, and the Rev. Clyde Carr, M.P.; trustees: Messrs A. Kennedy, J. S. Herron, J. Ernslie; executive: Messrs J. Weir, S. F. Hanson, W. W. Best, F. Triggs, W. Cumming, J. J. Duncan, and A. J. McPherson; secretary and treasurer: Mr A. Mathieson; auditor: Mr A. B. Herdman. After the meeting a social hour was spent.
