STRONG SIDE

SOUTH’S GOOD REPRESENTATION (By “Wing-Forward.”) While the team which has been styled the “New Zealand" side is only a provisional one, it can be taken for certain that the fifteen for the first test will not differ very much from that which is to take the field on Saturday. The greatest series of trials ever held in New Zealand has almost come to an end, and the selectors have, or should have, made up their minds as to the ability of a majority of the players. Not having seen the trials, one is not competent to criticise, but judging by the broadcasts and the written comments of the games, the selectors have sorted the players out fairly well. There hfts been exceptionally keen competition and it seems to be universally conceded that the talent available this year is of a calibre sufficient fully to test the Springboks. The apparent weakness of New Zealand back play of recent years, the inside backs, appears to have been overcome and Hooper, of Canterbury, is hailed as a second Cooke. If such is the case, then there is little need to worry about the three-quarters lacking opportunities. Everything will lepend on how the forwards fare. In the pack which has been selected there are some fine men. It is possible that they will be conceding weight, but they are a young lot, with tons of pace and ability to handle, and it would not be surprising to find them bringing back the style of the great packs of the past. They were men who could handle like backs, but who were also good scrummagers and in the eight selected they have proved their worth in the loose and also in the tight. South Canterbury has no direct representation in the New Zealand team, but McAuliffe (half) and Green (forward) are both Ttmaru boys. Saxton is an emergency for Saturday’s game. Throughout the week Morrison has played consistently. good football, according to accounts, and must have reached form far above what he rhspiayed in club games. He has worthily upheld the reputation of the district, as also has Saxton and Strang, and all three deserve credit on their fine performances. Morrison has been chosen for The Rest on Saturday, so he will have a further chance to show his ability against the chosen representatives. Another Timaru boy who figures In the Rest is C. W, Williams, who plays for ’Varsity in Christchurch. A noteworthy feature of the teams selected is that the South Island, for the first time for many years, has a majority. Actually there are 10 South Islanders in the New Zealand side, and

five North, a two to one ratio, which has never previously prevailed. In The Rest there are eight South and se”en North Island players. It is evident that the standard in the South this year is remarkably high, and the selectors have chosen the men on their ability. The trials have been a cas: of the survival of the fittest, and whatever team finally takes the field against the Springboks it can be relied on to uphold the best traditions of New Zealand Rugby.
