H. Craw- 1 ford met Andrews, who has the i reputation of being a lion-killer. I Crawford, in his usual unhurried style, 1 settled down to a long driving battle. 1 The second set was a great baseline 1 duel, interspersed with volleying. 1 There were seven deuces in the i thirteenth game. Andrews lost form . in this set, and Crawford took the I third easily. < McGrath, in the early games against ' Coombe had a pleasant practice. He i slacked off in the third set, however, I and Coombe took advantage of this by increasing his speed, and playing vigorously, he won well, and deserved his win. Bromwich opened confidently against Kirby. He won the first set by accurate driving. He slipped twice on the greasy court In the second, but Increased his pace in the third and fourth sets, and forced Kirby into errors. Sproule had a marathon encounter , with the 21-year-old South African, , Fannin, whose ultra steadiness won ■ him the match. , In the doubles, Crawford and McGrath, the seeded pair, went under owing to their uneven play, and the Czech’s greater speed and accurateness. Results are:— SINGLES Second Round: Prenn defeated Cooper. 6-1, 6-2, 6-4. Khoslnkie defeated Wilde, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. MEN'S DOUBLES First Round: Stedman and Brugnon defeated Lister and Taylor, 6-2, 6-1. 2-6, 6-3. Menzel and Hecht defeated Crawford and McGrath, 6-3, 6-3. 6-2. MEN’S SINGLES Second Round: Crawford defeated Andrews, 6-4, 8-6, 6-1. McGrath defeated Coombe, 6-3, 6-3, 5- 6-2. Bromwich defeated Kirby, 7-5, 2-6, 6- 6-3. E. E. Fannin defeated Sproule, 7-5, 3-6, 1-6, 8-6, 6-0. Stedman defeated Sharpe, 6-4, 6-4 (retired). Henkel defeated Tinkler, 2-6, 7-5, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3. Van Deneynde defeated Eddes, 7-5, 6-4. 6-3. Grant defeated Morton, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. Von Cramm defeated Tuckey, 6-2, 6-0, 6-4. Parker defeated Brugnon, 6-0, 6-3, 6-4. | Austin defeated Sabin, 6-2, 6-3, 6-0. Budge defeated Hughes, 6-2. 6-2, 6-2. I Other winners included: Mako, Lacroix, Kululjevic. WOMEN’S SINGLES Second Round: Senorita Lizana defeated Miss Lumb, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2. Mlle. Jedrzejowska defeated Miss Beazley, 6-1, 6-1. Mrs Andrus defeated Yorke, 6-3, 6-4. Third Round: Mme. Sperling defeated Miss Horn, 6-2, 6-0. Miss Jacobs defeated Miss Heeley, 6-3, 6-1. MIXED DOUBLES First Round: Miss Lee and Dicken defeated and Lyle, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
