ST. ANDREWS

SCHOOL COMMITTEE In view of the unsatisfactory condition of the St. Andrews School, which has been condemned by the authorities, the School Committee at its monthly meeting decided to do all possible to have the reconstruction of the school commenced as early as possible. Mr D. Barnes, M.P., and Mr Benstead are expected to pay a visit during this week to make an inspection. Messrs W. Cague and E. D. Hoskin were appointed a sub-committee to take charge of the building of a bicycle stand at the school. The chairman (Mr J. R. Trimble) reported that the construction of soak pits and repairs to the asphalt paths had been carried out. It was decided to organise children’s evenings at the end of the term. DRAMATIC CLUB At a special meeting of the members of the St. Andrews Dramatic Club, it was decided to abandon the further production of plays this year, owing to a number of members having left the district. Motions of sympathy with Mrs Woodhouse, the Copland, Porter and Gray families, who have suffered bereavement, W'ere carried. The secretary was asked to write to Mrs W. E. Mills (club producer) conveying a hope that she would make a speedy recovery. The resignation of Mr Alan O'Neill who has left the district was received with regret. It was decided to assist outside clubs who cared to produce plays in the St. Andrews district. Acknowledgment of the valuable help given by Mr and Mrs Baimerman in the production of plays was expressed by members. ANNUAL TEA The annual tea for the Anglican Sunday School children given by the teachers, parents and friends w T as held in the Sunday School hall. At the conclusioii of the tea the children paraded in fancy costumes. The prizes were awarded by the judge, Mrs Foxon, as follows: Girls, Marion Wilkie, Joyce Cook, Una Read. Boys, Colin Cook, Ross Trimble, Esmond Dix. EARLY LAMBS Early lambs have made their appearance on the property of Mr T. M. Pooke (Pareora) and the Coplands Estate (Esk Valley). BASKETBALL Games in the Otaio Basketball SubAssociation’s competition resulted: St. Andrews 20 v. Springbrook 3; Pareora B defaulted to Southburn. The position of the teams at the end of the first round is as follows: Pareora A 7 points, St. Andrew's 6, Southburn 5, Springbrook 2, Pareora B 0. The draw for next Saturday is: Southburn v. St. Andrews, at Southburn; Pareora A v. Pareora B, at Pareora. CARD EVENING A card evening, held by the St. Andrews branch of the Labour Party, was largely attended. The prizes were won by Mrs Tony O’Loughlin and Mr J. White (Kohika). Second prizes were awarded to Mrs G. J. King and Mr Frank Shea jr. SCHOOL GAMES On Monday afternoon two basketball teams and one football team from the St. Andrews primary school journeyed to Pareora East, where friendly games were played. The Rugby was won by Pareora East by 14 to 10. Mr K. McPhail was referee. The basketball matches resulted: Pareora A 23, St. Andrews A 3, St. Andrews B 4, Pareota B 3. The visitors were entertained by the home teams at afternoon tea. CRIBBAGE EVENING

At the weekly cribbage evening held under the auspices of the Pareora School Committee, the prizes were won by Miss L. Coote and Mr C. Morris.
