RECENT DOG TRIALS

SMALL PROFIT MADE A balance-sheet presented at a meeting o. the Committee of the Geraldine Collie Club disclosed that there had been a small credit balance in connection with the recent annual trials, and that the bad weather on the second day had affected the receipts. The president (Mr T. T. Ritchie.) occupied the chair. Present: Messrs D. Pringle, F. E. South, T. C. Clarkson, J. L. Boa, R. A. Pringle. D. Scully, W. Hardie. J. Johnstone. J. Simpson, D. G. Cain, J. Chisholm. C. Inglis, G. T. Cain. «A. A. McLeod and T. J. Paterson (secretary). The balance-sheet showed a small credit balance, Mr T. J. Paterson remarking that although the entries had been better than last year, there had been a decrease in the number of members and in the amount of the donations. The unfavourable weather had been a factor in the decreased takings on the second day. The president expressed disappointment at the position disclosed, as he had hoped that the Club would have shown a good credit balance this year. It was satisfactory to note that the prize money had been well distributed, 19 competitors, who had entered a total of 23 dogs, having e£ch secured a prize. Mr Ritchie expressed the thanks of the Club to the Geraldine

business men who had given splendid support with special prizes and cash donations.

The secretary was instructed to write thanking Mr H. J. D. Acland, of Ml. Peel Station, for the loan of sheep and tl.e use of his lorry for carting fencing material to the ground; to Mr W. Blair for the use of his ground for the trials; to Mr E. E. Scott for donating timber for the yards; to the judges, Messrs J. Davison (Hanging Rock) and H. G. Waters (Albury) for their services. and to Mrs O. Keen for giving a cake. GAPES VALLEY INSTITUTE ADDRESS ON MAORI CURIOS At the monthly meeting of the Gapes Valley Women’s Institute, the President, Mrs H. Bailey, occupied the chair. Several visitors were welcomed end one new member. Mrs A. Donnithorne, was elected.

Mrs T. Masefield and Miss. I. Bigham were appointed to take charge of the competitions, and Mrs C. G. Hibbs was deputed to take charge of the sales table. Mesdames H. and G. Bailey were appointed delegates to the annual meeting of the South Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes to be held in Geraldine. Congratulations were extended to Mrs W. P. D. Barker and Miss L. Max- - ell on their success in the competitions at the Fairlie show. Arrangements were made for the birthday party which, it was decided, would be held on May 7. Members were notified that at the next meeting there would be a demonstration of the making of flowers from wood fibre. The competition would be for the best passe partout framed picture. In the whi*' butterfly competition, Mary Donlihorne was first and Douglas Bray second. The chief feat -e of the afternoon’s programme was an address by Mrs H. S. M-Cully,. Peel Forest, on Maori curios and tools used in the early days. A large assortment of curios was on view', which interested the members and also the school children who were present. Mrs W. P. D. Barker, in proposing a vote of thanks, expressed great appreciation of the trouble Mrs McCully had taken. She impressed on the c'rild-en the importance of having a hobby. The motion was seconded by Mrs V. Le Lievre and carried by acclamation. Miss J. Chapman won the “A" section for the best bloom and Mrs H. Bailey was successful in the ”B” section. Afternoon tea was provided by the members.
