M.C.C. TEAM ARRIVES

LOOKING FORWARD TO A PLEASANT TIME By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, March 17. Mr G. O. B. Allen, captain of the M.C.C. team, which arrived from Australia to-day by the Wanganella, to play a series of matches in the Dominion, is convinced that he will never again visit Australia as a member of an English team in search of the “Ashes.” Asked what was the significance of the remark he is reported to have made that the final Test would be his last on the Melbourne Cricket Ground, he replied that it was quite obvious he would never come to Australia again. “It is quite apparent I could not stand another tour, and probably I’m not good enough.” Both Allen and the manager, Captain Howard, were very reticent about the Test matches, and cricket generally, as

between Australia and England, the former remarking that the team was looking forward to some “nice, pleasant cricket, free from anxiety.” Neither would express any opinion regarding playing Tests to a finish. Captain Howard said the Australian tour had been very enjoyable, and splendid hospitality was extended to the team. The team will leave to-night for Christchurch, for the first match of the New Zealand tour against a combined Otago-Canterbury team, commencing on Friday. Government Reception A Government reception was tendered to the M.C.C. team at Parliament House to-day. The Hon. P. Fraser, Minister of Education, welcoming the visitors on behalf of the Prime Minister who was unable to be present, paid a tribute to their sportsmanship in defeat in Australia. The New Zealand Cricket Council's welcome was extended by Sir A. Sim, president. Mr Allen, replying said the Australian tour had been a pleasant one, but the team was disappointed about the tests. After the third Test nothing seemed to go right for them. He wished the New Zealand team success during the English tour, expressing the opinion that they would do well.
