FOUNDRIES CLOSED DOWN

EMPLOYERS’ REPLY TO DEMANDS TWO THOUSAND MEN DISCHARGED United Press Association—By Ri*ctHc Telegraph —Copyright (Received March 17, 10.25 p.m.) SYDNEY, March 17. The employers at 40 metropolitan foundries to-day served notice to over 2000 employees that their services will not be required until further notice. Morts Dock and Coqkatoo Island Dock are now involved in the lock-out. A mass meeting of employees is being held to-morrow. A message from Sydney published yesterday stated; Between forty and fifty foundries, including the Clyde Engineering Company, are likely to close to-morrow as a result of the dispute with their employees, who are claiming increased wages and the elimination of overtime. About 2600 men will be directly affected, and 10,000 metal workers will be indirectly affected. The Metal Trades’ Employers’ Association insist on the observance of the award, and has issued an ultimatum to the employees of the Clyde Engineering Company and Gordon Marr and Sons, where the strikes have already occurred, that if the men do not return to work by to-morrow, the whole of the metropolitan foundries will close forthwith.
