MACKENZIE COUNTY AFFAIRS
To the Edit >r of " The Timaru Herald. Sir,—l would like to congratulate Mr Davidson and Mr Murray on the proposals which it is their intention to put before the Mackenzie County Council at the next meeting. It is gratifying to see that at last some of the Council members are waking up after being so long dormant. These worthy gentlemen who are at last trying to right a wrong may be assured of the loyal support of a huge majority of ratepayers, who sincerely hope the other Council members will befori the meeting, take some anti-hypnotism so that they might possibly remain awake during the meeting, anc vote in favour of the aforesaid motions.—l am, etc., ANOTHER RATEPAYER. Fairlie, March 9. To the Editor of " The Timaru Herald ' Sir, —During Saturday's meeting of the Highways Board i.’. Fan-lie, the business of the board was apparently interrupted while Mr Morrison congratulated the powers that be on the “low rate” cf the Mackenzie County Council. It will need stronger dope than this to soothe the ratepayers, and it is useless to compare the Mackenzie County Council rates with the North Island rates for the following reasons: (1) Owing to higher costs, through long winters and poorer soil the farmer ratepayers of the Mackenzie County Council cannot afford to pay the higher rates which are paid in the North Island. (2) It is well known that many farming properties in the North Island are little use to .their owners owing to high rates. (3) Two blacks do not make a white. Because the North Island is cursed with high rates, why should we be?—l am, etc., FARMER. Fair lie, March 9. To the Editor of ” The Timaru Herald " Sir—As I am interested in Mackenzie County affairs, I would like to congratulate Mr Murray on his very levelheaded notice of motion he proposes towards putting the Council on a sound financial basis. I think this is the only way that it can be done as the Council tried putting the staff off before without success. I would also like to ask Mr Davidson to explain himself a little more clearly in his notice of motion. He does not mention the engineer, but still the engineer is classed as staff as far as the ratepapers are concerned. And why does Mr Davidson want to keep the foreman when there is only going to be two graders kept on? I think it is time the members of the Council woke up and backed up Mr Murray, as he seems to be the hardest to hypnotise. The others want to keep an eye on him and see how he sidesteps the magic words.—l am, etc., FED-UP RATEPAYER. Albury, March 9.
