THEFT OF CLOTHING

UNUSUAL CIRCUMSTANCES By Telegraph — Pfpsp Association DUNEDIN, March 10. A very unusual case in the Police Court was that in which a young woman of 20 pleaded guilty to the theft of a nightdress and cardigan. The police stated that the complainant was a single woman, living in a room rented from the accused's mother. Accused and complainant were friends, holidaying together in January. Accused returned a few days earlier than her friend, to be married, and when complainant returned she found the clothing missing. Mr Warrington, for the accused, stated that like friends the accused and complainant used each other’s clothing. Complainant had informed him that she would have given her whole wardrobe rather than that accused should be prosecuted. Unfortunately accused was workless for months, and the temptation to dress up to the earlier standard overcame her.

The Magistrate, stating that it was an exceptional case, dismissed it under the First Offenders Act, ordering thef suppression of the name.
