DOMINION METEOROLOGIST (Forecast at 4 p.m. yesterday) General Situation— Aseries of depressions continues to cross the Dominion. An intense anti-cyclone remained centred near Tasmania, extending over the greater portion of the Tasman Sea, while pressure has been very low in the vicinity of the Chatham Islands. Winds—Moderate to strong southwesterly predominating, reaching gale force at places, especially on the East Coast, and tending westerly at times in the Cook and Foveaux Straits areas. Seas (New Zealand waters)—Moderate north of East Cape; elsewhere rather rough to rough. Eastern Tasman Sea—Moderate to strong south-westerly or southerly winds; seas moderate in the northern portion; rather rough in the southern. Weather—Still cold and changeable, with showers at times in most districts; possibly further hail squalls in places. Christchurch —Little rain fell yesterday, although the sky was overcast throughout the day with a cold southwest wind. The barometer fell early in the day and was steady at 29.71 inches at 7.30 p.m.
