VOTE ON SCOPE OF CONTROL PARALLEL WITH CRISIS IN AMERICA DEFINITE RESTRICTIONS OF FEDERAL POWER United Press Association—By aect.de Telegraph—Copyright (Received March 9, 8.50 p.m.) NEW YORK, March 9. “The New York Times” in a leader drawing a parallel between the Australian referendum and the United States constitutional crisis, comments that the referendum very clearly shows in at least one democracy where the voters had a direct ehance to express their opinion, that they refused to vote extensions of the Federal power. It is not the Supreme Court of Australia, or a mere group of “defestist lawyers," but the people themselves who prevented the Federal Government increasing its control. The Federal Cabinet to-day rejected all overtures by the Country Party to make further attempts to correct the Constitutional position preventing organised marketing in the Commonwealth. After a discussion lasting more than six hours, the Prime Minister (Mr J. A. Lyons) issued a statement to-night in which he said that as the Constitution stands after last Saturday’s referenda, the Commonwealth Parliament is powerless to assist. The Prime Minister indicated that the Country Party had pressed for bounties payable either out of special excise on dried fruits and butter or from general revenue.
