BELL AS FONT
CATHOLIC BAPTISM ON BRITISH NAVAL SHIP United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received March 9, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, March 8. The bell of the former Australian submarine, Otway, now stationed at Fort Gosport Blockhouse, was used as a font for the baptism of the son of Lieutenant D. Barrett, a member of the Blockhouse garrison, and a son of Major Barrett, trainer to the Royal stable for three years. This is believed to have been the first Catholic baptism on a British naval ship since the Reformation. The baptism was conducted in the Admiral’s cabin of the depot ship Dolphin.
