March 18 or 20—Wyndham T.C. March 27, 29, 31—Metropolitan T.C The Wellington meeting will begin to-morrow. Ladies will be admitted free to all parts of the course at the Timaru Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday. There are a few veterans in the Riverton Cup this j’ear. Great Star is eleven. Admiral Drake ten. and Toreador nine. It is reported that Mr G. J. Barton made overtures at Invercargill for the purchase of the Peter Moko three-year-old Coherto, but the price asked was beyond his idea of values.

There were no win investments on Happy Morn, Seascape. Benjamin, Gay Azaleas or Gracious at the Invercargill Trotting Club’s meeting, and several other horses carried only 10/-.

Wynan settled his chance by failing to go away in each of his races at Hutt Park. This young pacer has a lot of speed, but will be a doubtful betting proposition until M. Holmes persuades him to begin correctly

The Timaru Trotting Club’s summer meeting was affected by the restriction of train facilities and the withdrawal of excursion rates, but for this week’s fixture the customary rail service will be in operation, with special fares

Only four horses are handicapped on the bottom line of this year’s Great Autumn. This may be an indication that at last owners are awaking to the effect of the 7.7 minimum and are not so keen to throw money away by entering horses that can have no reasonable chance of success.

Silver Ring was favourite when he won the Thompson Handicap last season with 10.6, but he will probably be rather neglected If he starts under the same weight to-morrow. A year ago he had Just won the Dunedin Cup with 10.4, while this season he has been under a cloud and is reported to be short of work.

Martara paid a very small dividend in the Rangitikei Cup. Always well placed he ran to the front in the straight and won nicely from Lapel. It was a satisfactory St. Leger trial, and though It did not compare with Wild Chase's Dunedin Cup victory it will ensure solid support for the northerner in the classic.

For their wins at Hutt Park. Gallant Knight and Starwyn were each penalised 12 yards in their races at the Timaru meeting. Starwyn’s reassessment represents 48 yards, as he was giving away three seconds to enter the class. The penalty will not stop either horse from being elected favourite if it goes to the post.

A week or two ago it looked as if Sir Charles Clifford would have three representatives—Wild Chase, Paper Slipper, and Trench Fight—to select from in the Great Easter; and a like number —Wild Chase, Trench Fight and Top Notch—in the Great Autumn. Now Trench Fight is out of commission, and Paper Slipper has added a split hoof to his knee trouble and may not see the post.

Newspapers which were represented at Hutt Park on Saturday are practically unanimous that Starwyn won at his second start although he was not officially placed in the first four. That in itself is not proof that a mistake was made, as all the pressmen viewed the finish from the same location at rn angle which favoured the horse on the outside. The incident, should, however lead to the scrapping of the antiquated judge's box on the Wellington course.

Seven or eight sets of colours new Co Washdyke will be sported if all the acceptors for the Nu-sery Stakes go to the post on Saturday. Parauris’s jacket will be only a variation of Mr J. McQuilkin’s well-known rose and pink hoops; and while Lord Zetlard’s driver may look strange it will be merely because D. Withers has registered a different set from his green, pink and black. But Ceres. Horse Power, Waikarl Jack and Three Bells will all introduce new racing livery.

Although there has been a lot of broken weather racing and trotting clubs in Southland have been very fortunate In having flue Weather for their respective meetings this season and last Saturday was the only day that has not been fine out of 15 days’ racing since the last week In October. On Saturday, however, from early morning until after the last race rain never let up, and the course became a quagmire. It cannot be anything but heavy for the Birchwood Hunt meeting on Saturday next.

Another opportunity for barrier practice and a run on the racing track Was given to maiden horses at Washdyke yesterday morning, the proceedings being watched by a fair number of onlookers. Several of the more experienced pacers and trotters also took advantage of the chance for a good work out in preparation for the Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday and the facilities given by the officials were much appreciated.

Ormulu has been scratched for the Timaru Nursery Stakes.

Noctumus went south yesterday morning to run at the Birchwood Hunt meeting on Saturday. R. Beale will ride him there. Queen of Song has no engagement on the opening day of the Wellington meeting, but sh ehas gone to Trentham to run in the Autumn Handicap on Saturday. Royal Limond will leave Riccarton on Sunday night for Invercargill to race at Otautau and Riverton. R. Beale has been again engaged co ride the Grand National winner in his jumping engagements this season Wild Chase has an impressive record this season. After winning the Wainui Handicap at Trentham in the spring, he finished second to Gallio in the Harcourt Stakes. At the New Zealand Cup meeting he won the Riccarton Handicap, Derby, and Canterbury Cup, and was then put aside. After finishing second to Davolo in the Midsummer Handicap, he won the Dunedin Cup and Hazlett Cup, making his score for the season six wins and two seconds in eight satrts Martara also has a good record. Following wins in the hack class he won an open handicap at Woodville prior to finishing close up in the Great Northern Derby. At the summer fixture at Trentham he won the Douro Cup (hacks) and the Summer Handicap, and since then has annexed the Taranaki and Rangitikei Cups. It seems useless to look beyond this pair for the winner of the St. Leger at Trentham to-morrow.
