NORTH AND SOUTH

NO DISCRIMINATION “ It has been said that the Government is not concerned with the welfare of the South Island. It is New Zealand as a whole that we are concerned about and not one particular part.” This statement was made by the Hon. W. E. Parry, Minister of Internal Affairs, in replying to a welcome at the annual conference of delegates to the Municipal Association of New Zealand, which opened in Timaru last night.

“We will stand or fall by the country we are living in,” said Mr Parry. It was the idea of the Government to see that the work of the whole of the Dominion was pushed ahead without favour to one part. Everything would be done to develop the South Island equally with the North Island. There would be no discrimination in that respect.

One of the most important jobs that had to be done, said the Minister, was to encourage efficiency of local body Government. Democracy depended on the success of that form of Government find the only way to make democracy safe was to make local Government as efficient as possible. Mr Parry said he was particularly interested in Timaru and the South Island as he wanted to know all about it.
