TROUT FISHERIES
MAINTAINING HIGH STANDARD "Concentrated effort is being made by the Department of Internal Affairs to maintain the present high standard of the trout fisheries under its control,” stated the Hon. W. E. Parry (Minister of Internal Affairs) in an interview with a representative of "The Timaru Herald” last night. The Minister said that so continued for many years had been the attack made by anglers in New Zealand and from overseas on the Rotorua and Taupo fisheries—which districts the Department of Internal Affairs controlled—that extra pressure, coupled with' research, was gecessary to keep pace with the onslaught. The Minister said that from the investigations he had made he would be satisfied if the Department could keep the waters stocked with their present plentiful supply of well-conditioned fish. He had a lot of faith in the Fish Research Department and, from what had been accomplished so far, he was encouraged to think his faith would not be misplaced. “New Zealand would get a bad hit if its renowned fisheries were stripped of their good sport,” added Mr Parry. “Sportsmen come to us from all parts of the world because they are sure of the sport and. to keep it so, the Government is exerting' itself along all avenues.”
The Minister said he was looking forward with pleasure to seeing some of the fishing grounds of the South Island, of which he had had such good tidings from sportsmen he had met.
