IN OTHER CENTRES Christchurch—The sun shone for short intervals yesterday morning with a light north-easterly, but the wind changed to south-west early in the afternoon and the sky became heavily overcast. Rain started and continued into the evening. The barometer was steady at 29.73 inches. Ashburton—A fine week-end was experienced with a north-westerly wind on Saturday and overcast and cooler conditions on Sunday. Conditions were overcast again yesterday, and a few spots of rain fell in the morning. The temperature was mild and a northerly wind was blowing. Showers of rain fell later in the morning and continued at intervals during the day. Geraldine—Dull and overcast, with low temperatures; occasional showers fell at times. Temuka—Yesterday morning was showery and cold with a light easterly breeze. One point of rain fell. The maximum temperature was 57 degrees and the minimum 38. The glass was rising last evening. Waimate (for the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. yesterday). Thermometer: maximum 58, minimum 44, bright sunshine nil. Wind gauge—miles run in the last 24 hours—ss. Rain, 0.3 inches. Yesterday was overcast and heavy showers fell. Dunedin—Yesterday was fine with passing clouds and a moderate southwesterly breeze. The maximum temperature was 60 degrees. The barometer reading was 29.65 inches last night.

DOMINION METEOROLOGIST (Forecast at 4 p.m. yesterday) General Situation—A westerly depression has been passing eastwards, but a slight secondary is at present crossing the Dominion, while an anticyclone of considerable intensity is approaching across the Tasman Sea. Winds—South-westerly over the southern half of the South Island, elsewhere westerly predominating at first, but southerlies soon becoming general; force moderate to strong and increasing, especially along the East Coast and In the Cook Strait area. Seas (New Zealand waters)—Rough on the west coast of the North Island and in Foveaux Strait; elsewhere slight to moderate, but rising south of Castlepoint. Eastern Tasman Sea—Moderate to strong southerly winds, with rather rough seas, but wind and sea gradually decreasing. Weather—Cool and changeable with showers at times in me t districts; improving soon, however, on the west coast of the South Island, and gradually elsewhere.
