With the idea of discussing a proposal to have a new province formed north of Auckland, the Dargaville Chamber of Commerce will meet the Whangarei chamber on March 15, in response to a letter received from the latter body. At Monday’s meeting of the Dargaville chamber, the chairman, Mr C. L. Bagnall, said there was a suggestion for the formation of a new province north of Auckland with the centre at Whangarei, and also an education board there. He knew of work it was intended to have done to school buildings during the holidays which had not been carried out owing to the uncertainty of the position. “It is not in the interests of the district that these questions should be held over indefinitely,” he said. “The Atmore report favours having a board north of Auckland, but the Auckland board is antagonistic to cutting off the north.” Mr F. A. Jones said that the north each year was becoming a more important part of the Dominion, and it should pursue anything advantageous. Actually Whangarei was the “livest” town north of Auckland, and Dargaville must not be parochial.
