HUNTING IN SOUTH CANTERBURY MASTER OPTIMISTIC Prospects for hunting in South Canterbury this year are much brighter according to a statement made by the Master of the South - Canterbury Hunt (Mr C. L. Orbbll) at the annual meeting yesterday. Hunting was taking on again said Mr Orbell, as there Wks quite an for horses ahd there Was a feeling that there would be more followers. “We do not exist to run a race meeting and a point-to-point. Those meetings are very enjoyable, but hunting is our first consideration,” he added. In moving the report and balance sheet the Master said that a profit of £219 on a succesful year was most satisfactory. The profit on the race meeting was less than usual, but that was due to the smaller nomination and acceptance fees which were down about £5O. The season produced high standard hunting. Farmers Thanked “We all appreciate the wonderful type of farmers we have in South Canterbury,” continued Mr Orbell. To-day it was the Hunt's proud boast that there was not a single farm on which the hounds did not have a right of entry. Members owed a deep debt Of grdtitude to the farmers, ind it Was up to them tb look after, the lliterests of property holders when they were in the field. Tributes to the good work of the secretary (Mr H. H. Fraser) and his staff were paid by the Master. The work had been done thoroughly at small remuneration throughout the slump period, and the Hunt should be most grateful to its secretary. The race meeting was in Mr Fraser’s hands and he could say without fear of contradiction that it was as well run as any other in the Island. The motion was seconded by Mr W. J. Bassett and carried. Election of Officers The electioii of officers resulted: Master, Mr C. L. Orbell; deputy-Master. Mr Harold Elworthy; committee, Misses B. Harper, S. Orbell, J. Edgar-Jones, Messrs R. Bassett, R. M. BurdOn, A. S. Elworthy, H. Elworthy, H. H. Elworthy, S. K. Gillingham, M. C. larper, A. G. Macdonald, M. F. Maze, R. Murphy, C. L. Orbell, W. H. Orbell, W. D, Orbell and N. A. Rattray; audittir, Mr A. C. Martin; secretary, Mr li. H. Fraser; field secretaries, Misses B. Harper and S. Orbell. It was agreed to open the hunting season on April 3. It was decided to hunt over the Waimate district on similar terms to previous years. At a subsequent meting of the committee it was agreed that Mr Donald Grant represent the Hunt on the Racing Conference and that Mr A. S. Elworthy be its representative on the District Committee. Mr A. Elworthy and Miss Diana Elworthy were elected new members.
