PROFITS OF METAL COMPANIES North Broken Hill's quarterly dividend of 1/6 on its 5/- shares, equal to 120 per cent, is a good indication of the profits which base metal companies are making at the present time. This dividend is the highest ever paid by the company and compares with 77) per cent paid in 1935-36. In that year lead averaged £l6/4/6 and latest cables quote £32/8/9. Last financial year production was 61,350 tons. Spelter, of Which North Broken Hill mined 47.800 tons is £3l/1/3 per ton to-day and averaged £l5/4/- last year. North Brbken Hill’s profits last year were £636,940. They must be more than double that figure this year if the present price of lead and spelter are maintained. While the demand corresponds as closely to the supply as it is Just now no persistent downward movement seems possible. TOOIIEt’S, LTD. The directors of Tooheys Ltd., have decided to issue 250,000 shares of 16/each at a premium of 8/- per share. The new shares will be offered to shareholders oh the register in the proportidrt of one to six held on March 31. Simultaneously the directors announce payment of an interim dividend at the rate Of 9 per cent per annum for the half-year ending January 31, compared with 8 per cent for the last financial year.
