LORD NUFFIELD’S GIFTS

GENEROSITY APPRECIATED "I would like to refer to the wonderful philanthrophy of a gentleman who is at present visiting New Zealand. I refer to Lord Nuffield,” said Mr J. W. Dove (president) at the conference of the Hospital Boards’ Association in Timaru yesterday. Mr Dove said he thought that the conference appreciated to the full the generosity of such a man towards those who were suffering, and particularly those who were suffering from infantile paralysis. Those in the community today who were suffering from the disease would benefit considerably from his magnificent benefaction, and they would live to see the time when, as a result of his generosity, great progress would be made in the treatment of the disease and in the direction of research. The president moved: “That this conference express its appreciation to Lord Nuffield for his generous gifts towards the alleviation of suffering in New Zealand.” The motion was seconded by the Hon. W. H. Mclntyre (Buller), who said that Lord Nuffield was a very human man and the fact that he had at his disposal large sums of money should not be allowed to detract from the wonderful gifts which he had made to this and other countries. There were other men who had just as much money but they did not have the same humane traits for helping cripples and those who were suffering.

The resolution was carried by acclamation.
