March 27, 29, 31—Metropolitan T.C The first race at Motukurara tomorrow will start at 12.30. Shrewd has been recommissioned at Hastings after an absence of over three years. He is now twelve years old. Marsceres promises to be in strong demand for the Invercargill Cup today. Win and place machines will be operated at Invercargill to-day, and at Wellington and Motukarara to-morrow. On the Hastings track on Saturday Blue Garter bucked two riders off and took half an hour in being coaxed to gallop. In winning the Herries Memorial Cup at Te Aroha, Master Brierly equalled the record for the race (2.17 2-5) which he established three years ago. For taking a wrong position at the barrier for the Waihou Handicap at Te Aroha with Impasto, on whom he won the race, A. E. Ellis was fined £3 by the judicial committee. F. J. Smith’s team for Wanganui consists of Levity, Frank Best, Mountain Flight, Accel, Ann Pointer and Cash Down, the last-named being a novice by Frank Worthy from Florrie Bingen.

Ashaway, winner of the Centenary Cup at the Clifden meeting, and of the Winton Cup, is still eligible for hack, events, and even if he won the £6OO Riverton Cup he would be qualified to run in the Champion Hack Handicap later in the meeting.

In connection with the Te Aroha meeting, it is interesting to note that totalisator turnover for the first day of £53,370 exceeds those of New Zealand Cup day at Riccarton (49,737) and Wellington Cup day at Trentham (£49,737).

Martara has been accepted for both the Rangitikei Cup and the open sprint on Saturday, and though his chance might be better in the Cup it is probable that he will do his preparatory race for the St. Leger Stakes next week in the shorter event at Bulls.

Apparently a season at the stud has not impaired the speed of Diatomous to any extent, for he showed in front throughout the greater part of the sprint event the first day at Te Aroha, and eventually finished fairly well up. The Diacquenod horse is now going down in the handicaps.

The handicaps for the first day of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club’s meeting, which were to have been published on Monday, were withheld. No reason has been stated, but it is possible that the weights are being held in abeyance until after the Franklin races on Saturday.

The Winton Steeplechase winner Faculties has not been entered for the Great Western : teeplechase at Riverton, but will probably be seen in action over shorter distances on later days of the meeting. Faculties is a comparatively green ’chaser, and the policy adopted is a wise one.

When trained at Ellerslie Huntingmore was boomed as above the average because of his brilliant trials, but in his few races he failed to measure up to expectations. A few weeks ago, he had a change of scene, entering A. Cook’s charge at Te Awamutu, and apparently the move benefited him. for he won well each day at Te Aroha.

The Mantle stable apprentice, T. Lorigan, has a great record in connection with Lady Kyra, for in four mounts on the Lord Warden mare he has been a winner on every occasion. It is unfortunate for Lorigan that his

weight limits his opportunities, as he shows judgment in his riding and with more race practice would do well. Friesland must have been the hottest favourite ever to have contested the Opunake Cup. At one stage in the betting he was carrying just on twothirds of the totalisator. As a result many went off him in an attempt to secure the second dividend, but he eventually wound up carrying three and a half times as much money as the second favourite Tahurangi. It will be interesting to see how the three-year-olds, particularly Wild Chase and Martara, will be rated in the Great Autumn. They are recognised as the best of their age in their respective islands, and some northerners declare that Martarma is superior to the Riccarton colt. Martarma has not, however, any form comparable with Wild Chase’s Dunedin Cup win, and it seems inevitable that there will be a difference in their weights.

Mrs S. L. Parsons, of Wanganui, owner of Jonathan, has decided that the horse’s racing career shall terminate, and she lias presented him to his trainer. A. Cook (Te Awamutu) to be used as a hack. Jonathan was a fine performer at his best, his victories including the A.R.C. Easter Handicap, and the Railway Handicap. He won the latter event with 9.12, which is the highest weight carried to victory in that race. In the spring Mrs Parsons lost the services ol that fine three-year-old Gallio.

Alter the Wellington meeting in January, there were complaints from visiting trainers that the course proper at Trentham had been rougher than it usually was for the racing. Much attention has been given to the track since the meeting, when jt cut up badly during the three days’ racing. After the hoof hples had been filled and allowed to settle, most of the course was dressed, and the grass has come away well. The track is likely to cut up a little next week after a race or two on it, but it should stand up to the racing a great deal better than it did in January, provided fine weather holds.

At the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s meeting to-morrow four defections from the acceptors for the Juvenile Stakes are necessary to allow one race, as the safety limit at the five furlong barrier is 19. If a field of more than 19 parade, the race will be run in divisions, the winners to receive £65 and second horses £5. The divisions are as follows: First—Arrowglen, Lameri, Knockando, Nolana, Primak, Skylass, Cocksure, Garonne. Great Bramble, Lisnacree, Mulatto and Solpit Second—Clubman, Haggis. Lustral. Pride of Central, Rosanna, Bonnie Agnes, Comus, Mercenary, Happy Night, Love Affair, Princess Roma.

The win of Friesland in the Opunake Cup was his fourth in succession, and he will* carry a lot of Taranaki money at Trentham next week. Friesland’s career is ar. interesting one. When O. Cox was in Australia several seasons back with Golden Hair, a studtaaster made a gift of a Friarsdale yearling to the Hawera trainer. At the time he was an unprepossessing colt, very small and pot bellied. It seemed that he was destined to be a poor gift. Cox, however, showed plenty of patience and kept him in training for almost eighteen months without starting. Early in the 1934-35 season the Hawera trainer again set out for Australia with a tream, but he had no desire to take Friesland, so he offered him for sale. Cox assessed him as worth £5O, but at this price he failed to find a buyer. Shortly after this Friesland commenced to strike form, winning at his third start. Since then he has proved a mode! of consistency, and has won more in stakes (£1763) than any other Taranaki performer during the past three seasons.
