FAIRLIE

ANNUAL MEETING OF GOLF CLUB SUBSCRIPTION RAISED

At the annual meeting of the Fairlie Golt Club on Wednesday night, it was unanimously decided to raise the subscription for men to £2/10/-, reducible to £2/2, -if paid before May 31. For women the fee was fixed at 30/-, reducible to 25/-, and with a provision that the club would pay the first 30'required by the Ladies’ Golf Union. In his review of the position, the retiring president. Mr H. Carlton, said the club had succeeded in providing cheap golf, but if it had not been for the extensive work some members of the club had done, the subscriptions would have, of necessity, been raised before. The subscriptions, therefore, had been subsidised by those members who had worked for nothing. With reference to the smallness of the Fairlie subscriptions, a Timaru player had told him that if the club progressed the way it was goinfi, it would ulti-

mately be able to pay its members for playing golf. With the idea of keeping fees down, members had provided afternoon tea, whereas in some clubs a levy was made for that purpose. The coming season would be the fifth on the present links and a credit balance in the bank of about £lOO had been reduced to £9/14/8; in four years approximately £9l had been lost. The election of officers resulted: President, Mr W. B. Trotten; vice-presi-dents, Messrs W. A. B. Morton and J. Anniss; secretary, Mr W. J. Whitehead; treasurer, Mr Morton; match committee, Messrs John Macdonald and Rob J. Creighton; club captain. Mr H. Carlton; auditor, Mr G. F. Lyons. It was decided to appoint one member to take charge of the grounds, and the appointment was left to the general committee. April 10 was fix as the date for the opening of the season, and a working bee is to be arranged for April 3. Before Easter, a ball is to be held. A motion commending the work done by the retiring president and secretary (Mr A. H. Carlton) was carried with applause.

VISIT OF HIGHWAYS BOARD UPKEEP OF ROADS An important subject to be raised by the Mackenzie County Council when the Highways Board visits Fairlie tomorrow is a suggested arrangement by which the Council could do maintenance work on the main highways, a particular point being the provision of adequate snow-clearing equipment. Without such an arrangement, it is

contended that Council plant would have to travel over many miles ot highways in order to maintain side roads, and in the case of snow-clearing work, highway's would have to be cleared to reach side roads. For clearing roads of snow, the Mackenzie Council possesses the most modern equipment in New Zealand. Because of the Tekapo sheep sale, the monthly meeting of the Council has been postponed a week, but it is considered that most of the members will be able to meet the Board to-morrow. Tne chairman (Mr C. J. Talbot), who is a member of the Highways Board, is accompanying it on its tour, and intends to leave Balclutha to reach Fairlie in time for the Council meeting on Saturday of next week. PICTURES In the Aorangi Hall to-night there will be special entertainment for visitors to the Tekapo sale of “Do Ye Ken John Peel.” with a variety of supporting features. Mi E. Cholertno, optical specialist. managing director ol Procter's, the opticians, Christchurch, will be vtsitlng Fairlie, personally, and may be consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Gladstone Hotel on Monday and Tuesday. 11th and 12th January, from 9 am. to 5 p.m. Appointments can now be made by ringing the Gladstone Hotel.
