WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
PLEASANT POINT The sixth annual meeting of the Pleasant Point Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday. Mrs Cliff presided. An interesting letter was read from the Cuff ley link. Mrs Cliff gave a report on the year’s work and thanked all those who had helped to make the year a success. The balance-sheet showed a good credit balance. A solo was contributed by Mrs Cliff. The following officers were elected.— President, Mrs Liston; vice-presidents, Mesdames Candy and Andrews; secretary, Mrs Cunningham; treasurer, Miss G. Andrews; committee, Mesdames Herbert. H. Dossett, Turnbull. F. Dossett, Borrell, Macdonald, Drake, Williams. Hammond. Misses Kime, I. McPherson. J. Halstead. The competitions for the April meeting will be: Bowl of flowers, premier bloom, cooking apples, stamp collection. The competitions resulted.—Class A, tomatoes: Mrs Davidson 1 and 2. Posy: Mrs Davidson 1. Mrs Candy 2. Class B, tomatoes: Miss D. Davidson 1 and 2. Posy: Miss I. McPherson 1 and 2. Junior: Posy, Miss S. Chisholm. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Turnbull, Andrews, Borrell, Candy, Cunningham, Crawford, H. Dossett, Herbert. Misses F. Chapman and G. Andrews. GERALDINE The annual meeting of the Geraldine Women’s Institute was well attended. The vice-president (Mrs J. G. D. Willcox) occupied the chair in the absence of the president (Mrs L. S. R. King).
Before the meeting, a motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mrs Bibby was carried in silence. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. As the nominations for officers totalled the required number, no ballot was necessary, and the following were elcted. President, Mrs L. S. R. King; committee. Mesdames F. W. Grayburn, J. G. D. Willcox, R. Tagg, J. H. Lewis, H. Mitchelmore, W. H. Broad, Les. Bennington, J. Waller, C. J. Hayward and Misses Dora Maister and Frances Haskins.
A letter was received from the president thanking all for the loyal support accorded her during the 1936-37 season and wishing the meeting every success. The former president (Miss M. Cruickshank, Ashburton), wrote tendering her resignation, and wishing the Institute a very successful and happy year. Mesdames Rae and Stevenson were elected new members. Four resignations were received with regret. Mrs A. G. Brown gave details of the Cup competition for Women’s Institutes at the forthcoming Temuka and Geraldine A. and P. Association’s Show. On the motion of Mesdames A. G. Brown and F. W. Grayburn, it was decided to send a letter of congratulation to Mrs J. M. Spencer who had been awarded the 0.8. E. Prizes won during the year were presented by Mrs S. C. Chisnail, of Woodbury, as follows:—Most points: Mrs H. Mitchelmore <'3o); runner-up, Mrs G. R. Knibb (15). Most entries not having won any other prize: Miss Cruickshank. Mrs King’s special prize for Christmas cake: Mrs R. U. Richards. Mrs King’s special prize for Christmas pudding: Mrs H. V. Firman. Mrs Chisnail congratulated the Institute on the very successful year and the balance-sheet. She gave a talk entitled “Peep behind the scenes.” It was decided to enter for the Burnett Silver Cup competition for a lunch for four not to cost more than 4/-, at the Fairlie Show. The hostesses served a delicious supper.
