SOCIAL NOTES

Mrs R. A. Rickman, is staying with Mrs E. Howden, Park Lane. Miss M. M. Watt, Alexandra, is a guest at the Grand Hotel, Mr and Mrs A. B. Aitkin. Kaitangata, are at the Dominion. Mr and Mrs Addison, Wellington, and Mr and Mrs Alan J. Williamson, Sydney, are guests at the Grosvenor. Mrs Clark, Shanghai, who was the guest of Mrs Bruce Baxter, Evans Street, has left for Port Chalmers. Miss Wright, Wai-iti Road, who is staying with her sister. Mrs J. C. Templer, Geraldine, is expected home to-day. Mrs H. H. Gaudin (Auckland), Miss A. Farrar (Christchurch), Mr and Mrs L. A. Pack and Mrs C. Pack (Invercargill) are guests at the Balmoral. Mr and Mrs P. A. Elworthy, and Miss Diana Elworthy, Gordon’s Valley, who have been staying with Mrs W. N. Bond, “Dunrobin,” Southland, have left on a visit to the Southern Lakes. Miss Edith Moore, Melbourne, has returned from a trip to England and is staying with her father, Mr W. A. Moore, Christchurch, formerly of Timaru and Mrs Moore. Mrs D. Burnett, "Te Akatarawa,”’ Hakataramea, who is staying at her home in Wai-iti Road, will return south to-day. Mr and Mrs Sumpter, Waitangi, who were Mrs Burnett’s guests, have returned home. Mrs Gladstone Robinson, “Oakwood,” who has been on a visit to the Franz Josef Glacier, will return home to-day accompanied by her guest, Miss Turton, Wellington, who will stay with her for a few days. Dr Eleanor M. Reece, of Notting Hill Gate, London, has been appointed a divisional police surgeon to the Metropolitan Police Force. This is the first time a woman doctor has been appointed to such a post by Scotland Yard. Dr Reece will be largely concerned with the health of London policewomen. She qualified at London University and is an L.C.C. school medical officer.

An engagement has been announced between William O’Brien Lindsay, Sudan Political Service, third son of Colonel and Mrs M. E. Lindsay, Craigfoodie House, Fife, and Jane Sevilla, third daughter of the late Mr George Glass-Hooper and Mrs Glass-Hooper, Downe Hall, Bridport, Dorset. Mr Lindsay is a grandson of Mrs E. J. Riddiford and of the late Colonel W. S. Lindsay, Timaru.

A social and fellowship afternoon arranged by Chalmers P.W.M.U. was held in the church hall on Wednesday. The Rev. Llywelyn Williams presided. Musical items were given by Mrs C. Ballantyne and Mr Barlow, and a very enjoyable play reading was given by Mesdames D. S. Kemshed. R. D. King, L. M. Inglis and Misses C. B. Mills and M. Inglis. A dainty afternoon tea was served.
