WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

SOUTH CANTERBURY EXECUTIVE At the meeting of the Executive of the South Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes, Mrs L. E. Williams presided over the following members —Mesdames G. A. Macdonald, P. W. Hislop, J. McLeod, Chisnail, A. R. Guild, A. B. Mackenzie, A. G. Brown, M. B. Reid, and Misses A. T. Williams, E. L. Davies, G. A. Brown and Ferguson. Apologies were received from Mesdames W. E. Mills, R. W. Irving, P. Grant, and Miss A. Begg. On account of her approaching marriage, the resignation of Miss Begg was accepted with regret. A letter of congratulation is to be sent to Miss Jerome Spencer on her inclusion in the New Year honours.

Several reports were given by voluntary organisers. It was decided that organisers should be allotted longer time for speaking, and half of their expenses allowed in connection with their visits to institutes. It was also recommended that institutes should not crowd out the social half-hour. Mrs P. W. Hislop, on behalf of the tree-planting committee, suggested a big drive for Coronation year, and a hope was expressed that every member in the Federation would endeavour to plant a tree this year.

In connection with the Davies' Cup for most points at shows, prize tickets are to be sent to Miss Davies’ address at Woodbury. As Miss, Davies is leaving shortly for Great Britain, members expressed good wishes and hoped she would have an enjoyable trip. Mrs A. G. Brown was appointed to represent the Federation on the Executive of the Winter Show in place of Miss G. A. Brown. Miss Ferguson agreed to act as choir secretary for the competition for the Hodgkin Cup which will take place at the Winter Show in June. Mrs A. B. Mackenzie has given a cup to be competed for by choirs of not less than six and not more than eight voices in institutes with membership of 35 and under, besides the conductor and the accompanist. The secretary was instructed to send a letter of sympathy to the Waipawa Women’s Institute in the death of Mrs Bibby, a valued member, and writer of the words of the institute song. A report was received from Mrs A. H. Gillingham on the continued success of the Hospitality Circle. Congratulations were accorded Mrs Gillingham for her work. Arrangements and agenda were decided on for the annual meeting on April 28, when the speaker will be Mrs H. Paterson of Pahiatua, exDominion president. Nominations for

the offices of president and committee are to be sent in by March 27. For the banner competition at the annual meeting, prizes were given by Mesdames L. E. Wiliams, A. R. Guild, A. B. Mackenzie, and Miss Davies. Points will be awarded for community work, design, workmanship, and originality. Mrs G. A. M. Macdonald agreed to take charge of lecturettes. The following may be hired by institutes: “Superstitions and their Origins,” “Safety First,” “A Wonderful Century 18301930,” “Advancement of Women Through the Ages,” “The Art of Friendship.” Mrs Chisnall, treasurer, presented a satisfactory financial statement. Members are asked to bring gifts for the sales table at the annual meeting. It was decided to support the Forest and Bird Protection Society. It was agreed to support a remit from the National Council of Women to the Government, that all telephone charges be reduced in New Zealand. TESCHEMAKER At the first meeting for the year of the Teschemaker Women’s Institute, Mrs A. Mills presided. One new member was welcomed. A vote of sympathy with Mrs F. O’Boyle and family in their bereavement was passed. * Members were reminded that the annual meeting will take place next month and that nominations for the committee should be in the secretary’s hands 10 days before the meeting. After correspondence had been dealt with, Miss Bayliss gave an interesting demonstration of the making of natural looking flowers from woodfibre. Mrs O'Connen proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the demonstrator. Mrs Mills then wished Miss Bayliss bon voyage, and a happy interesting time during her visit to England for the Coronation. A presentation of a diary was made. Miss Bayliss suitably replied. An enjoyable and thought-pro-voking game, “World Personalities,” was won by Mrs Keown. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs Miles and Miss McFarlane. The competitions resulted as follows: Premier bloom, Mrs Powell 1, Mrs Miles and Miss McFarlane (equal) Mrs Henderson 3. Slice of Christmas cake, Mrs Henderson and Mrs Keown (equal) 1, Mrs A. Mills 2. Jug of flowers, Miss McFarlane 1, Mrs A. Mills 2, Mrs Powell 3.
