END OF THE OLD SUB-STATION
To the Editor or " The Timaru Herald ' Sir, —Some of your readers may have noticed that the old sub-station is down at last, and, as this marks the consummation of the desires of the property owners of the district, I wish publicly to thank all those who assisted in the work of inducing the Public Works Department to build the new power station on a less conspicuous site. It is impossible to mention all names, but especially are thanks due to the Rev. Clyde Carr, M.P. for Timaru, Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P. for Temuka, and our once beloved Mayor, the late Mr T. W. Satterthwaite (who gave such wonderful help and encouragement), other members of the Borough Council, members of the Power Board who were mostly' sympathetic, though as a body opposed at first to the expenditure involved; Mrs William Grant, Mr Donald Grant, Mr J. P. Newman and others who gave very material assistance; the executive officers of the Public Works Department, the South Canterbury PowerBoard and Timaru Borough Council, upon whom fell the work of advising and of rearranging the lay-out, and to yourself sir, for your editorials on the subject, which placed the issue so clearly before the public.
Speaking personally it will be with deep regret that I will leave this district, but I will do so with the knowledge that the map of Timaru is altered for the better and this “hill,” which has yet to be discovered, has been preserved for future generations, thanks to the help of all those well-wishers who rallied round in the time of need. — I am, etc.. VIOLET G. HAMILTON. Pages Road, Timaru, March 2.
