TEMUKA

PRECAUTION AGAINST FLOODS STOP-BANKS BEING INSPECTED As a precaution against erosion and extensive flooding during the winter, a complete inspection of the stop-banks on all the rivers of the Temuka riding of the Geraldine County is being made. Rabbit burrows in the banks sometimes led to the river breaking through and causing a considerable amount of damage, said the county foreman (Mr C. Williams) yesterday. An occurrence of that sort had led to the big flood at Clandeboye last year. Besides the fllling-ln of rabbit burrows on the banks, county workmen would also attend to any other necessary repairs. In the Opihi about half a mile upstream from the main traffic bridge about 25 chains of willows on the water’s edge had been lopped into the water. Clearance of riverbeds to facilitate flood discharge would also be carried out where necessary but the work would not be carried out on such a large scale as for last year. PIPE BAND NEW EQUIPMENT TO HAND Important portions of the new uniforms for the Temuka Highland Pipe Band have come to hand and are to be issued to members at a parade this evening. The parts of the uniform that are being made in Timaru are to be delivered shortly, said the drum-major (Mr C. F. de Joux) yesterday, and the band has arranged for its first public appearance in the new equipment to take the form of a church parade to the Presbyterian Church on March 14. The president (Mr A. W. Buzan) and civilian members of the management committee, are to attend the parade, and in the afternoon the band is to visit Geraldine. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE ANNUAL MEETING HELD For the seventh successive year, Miss M. L. Ferguson was elected president of the Temuka Women’s Institute at its annual meeting on Tuesday. Miss Ferguson was the foundation president of the local organisation and tributes to her outstanding ability were paid by members in nominating her for reelection to the position. A membership of 140 was mentioned in the annual report, which also stated that the Institute had been represented by Mrs V. Brookland at the Dominion Conference and by four members at the half-yearly and annual meetings of the Federation. Efforts to raise funds by means of a musical afternoon, a bring-and-buy drive and competitions, had proved most successful. For Arbor Day members had attended a function at which trees were planted along the Main South Road. Mrs T. N. Scott had represented the Institute on the Health Stamp Committee and members had taken part in the organisation of a bay at the South Canterbury Winter Show. At the annual meeting of the Federation Mesdames A. S. Mclnnes and E. Blackmore had had charge of a bay representing the unit, and at the country dance festival at Geraldine the folk dance team again won the Federation Cup. At the Temuka flower show a silver cup presented by the late Mrs A. Routledge for the most points gained in the' needlework and handcraft section by an Institute member had been won by Temuka largely through the success of Mrs and Miss Keys. A spring flower show was held in October and a display of handwork, at a later meeting, was made. Reports from the arts and crafts, gardening and folk dance circles were given and thanks were

extended to many people who had given talks and demonstrations as well as to many others who had helped. After the adoption of the report and balance-sheet a vote of thanks and congratulation to the committee on the successful year was moved by Mrs A. Hayhurst and carried. Thirty-three nominations were received for 17 places on the committee and the following, from among whom the officers other than president will be chosen by the committee, were elected: Miss K. McShane and Mesdames A. S. Mclnnes, J. J. E. Rooney, D. C. Clark, D. Taylor, W. F. Evans, V. Brookland, W. S. Harbrow, W. J. Keys, J. N. Taylor, E. C. Brittenden, E. Blackmore, R. E. Thompson, H. Wilson, M. E. Hill, T. N. Scott, and W. Moore. Prizes for the aggregate points in monthly competitions held throughout the year were presented by Miss G. Brown to Mrs V. Brookland, who gained first place and Mrs M. Williams. Mrs D. Taylor, convener of the flower show committee, reported that the annual show would be held in the Parish Hall early in May.
