GERALDINE

HEAVY FALL OF RAIN CROPS BEATEN DOWN The light rain which commenced early on Sunday evening was followed by a steady downpour which continued throughout the night and intermittently all day yesterday, when conditions were most unseasonable. In the early hours of the morning a heavy downpour set in with the result that 1.51 in. was recorded on Mr B. R. Macdonald’s gauge for the twenty-four hours ended at 9 a.m. yesterday. Heavy crops throughout the district are showing the effect of the downpour, but they may escape damage should fine hot weather be experienced. Shearing has been Interrupted throughout the district, although in cases operations have not commenced owing to the set-back by the showery conditions early last week. A party of campers at the Te Moana River had an unenviable experience owing to the downpour early yesterday morning. Driven from their camping quarters by the heavy rain, they broke camp before 5 a.m., and were taken to Geraldine and shelter by a garage employee who had been summoned in the early hours. HEALTH STAMP SALES Since the commencement of the Health Stamp campaign stamps to the value of £43 9s have been sold at the Geraldine Post Office, and the use of these stamps on Christmas parcels and correspondence was a pleasing feature. In addition a considerable sum has been raised by direct donations to the campaign funds. A JUBILEE DINNER Mr H. Blissett, of Geraldine, who recently resigned from the staff of the Geraldine Borough Council, enjoyed a unique anniversary on Christmas Day. Fifty years ago he and another young man enjoyed their Christmas dinner at The Hermitage, Mount Cook, when they were engaged on building work. As the fiftieth anniversary of the occasion approached, Mr Blissett determined that he would celebrate by again dining at The Hermitage on Christmas Day, although none of his colleagues on the former occasion are now surviving. Mr Blissett accordingly carried out his wish on Friday last. TRAINING COLLEGE ENTRANCE The names of Eileen Alice King and Lindsay Henry Coursey, of the Geraldine District Hight School, were omitted from the published list of candidates who had secured partial passes in the Training College Entrance examination.

Procters, the Opticians, Christchurch, will be making their next professional visit to Geraldine, early in the New Year, when they may be consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Crown Hotel. Appointments can now be made by ringing Mr Morris Williams, 'phone 61
