The barometer stood at 30.00 in. at 10 p.m. Ashburton—After fine, mild weather during the week-end, heavy rain began to fall about midnight and continued yesterday. The sky was hevaily overcast, with the wind from the southwest. The temperature was cool. Conditions cleared about 2 p.m., when the rain stopped and the sun began to break through the clouds. Geraldine—Steady downpour in the early morning; showery throughout the day. Rainfall on Mr B. R. Macdonald’s gauge for the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. yesterday, 151 points.

Winds.—Moderate to strong northerlies at first about and north of Cook Strait, moderate to fresh southerlies or south easterlies thence southwards and extending over the whole Dominion by morning. Seas (New Zealand waters).—Rough in the Cook Strait area, elsewhere slight to moderate but later rising somewhat south of Castlepoint. Eastern Tasman Sea—Moderate to fresh southerly to south-easterly winds and moderate to rather rough seas, conditions moderating to-morrow Weather.—Fair to fine in South Westland and the far south, elsewhere cloudy to overcast and in places misty or foggy with intermittent rain, improving by to-morrow, especially in western districts, temperatures becoming cool.
