BATHER DROWNED

PLIGHT NOTICED TOO LATE t»v reiser* -Pres” Association INVERCARGILL, December 27. Godfrey Baxendale Beissel, a married man, aged about 22, residing in Invercargill, was drowned while bathing in the Waihopai river at Longbeach this afternoon with three of his brothers-in-law, Hector, Malcolm and lan McKenzie, of Rimu. Beissel remained longer in the water than the others, and twice sank before it was realised that anything was wrong. Hector McKenzie, in spite of the fact that he was unable to swim, went to the rescue, but was forced to struggle back to the bank after three unsuccessful attempts to bring Beissel to the surface. Help was then summoned. It was 4.45, however, before George Nunn, a farm labourer, of Rimu, was able to recover the body. Beissel was an employee in the mechanical department of the “Southland News.”
