GERALDINE

BOXING DAY A QUIET HOLIDAY The town was very quiet on Boxing Day. when bright sunshine was enjoyed throughout the day, and, with the exception of steady motor traffic which continued north and south without intermission, the business area was deserted. Normally a popular resort on a warm holiday, the swimming baths bore an unusually quiet appearance as the baths had been emptied by the Geraldine Swimming Club in order to avoid a congregation of children and young people in view of the cases of infantile paralysis in various parts of the Dominion. The Geraldine Bowling Club’s green proved popular throughout the day. CHURCH SERVICES All the services conducted by the various denominations were well attended yesterday. In the Parish of Geraldine, the vicar, Rev. Canon J. F. Coursey was the celebrant at Holy Communion at Peel Forest at 11 a.m. yesterday. A large congregation and enthusiastic singing marked the coral service held at St. Mary’s yesterday evenng. TOWN AND COUNTRY TENNIS The following are the positions of the various teams competing in the Temuka Town and Country Tennis Sub-Association’s Shield matches:

“THUNDER MOUNTAIN” George O’Brien in Zane Grey’s “Thunder Mountain” and Edward Everett Horton in “Ten Dollar Raise,” a delightful farce, will head a double feature programme at the Municipal Theatre this evening. The first picture is replete with all the excitement of a gold rush, the primitive justice of the West, and the romance .of a strong man and a lovely woman. “Ten Dollar Raise” is a fast moving story based on the theme that love cannot live without ready cash. "Show Boat” will be screened on January 7 and 8.
