CRICKET COMPETITION SCHOOL’S FIRST DEFEAT High School suffered its first defeat of the season in the Waimate cricket competition on Saturday when Waimate secured a comfortable victory. Batting first High School scored 90 runs, 50 of which were contributed by W. O’Sullivan. J. Balfour (18) was the only other batsman to reach double figures. With a score of 167 Waimate established a comfortable lead. W. Miller’s 53 was the highest score for the match, while L. Holden 34, L. Martin 22, A. Guy 18 and L. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE WILLOWBRIDGE Mrs J. C. Faulkner presided over a fair attendance of members and visitors at the December meeting of the Willowbridge Women’s Institute. Mrs W. J. Fletcher and Miss A. Faulkner ga re very interesting reports on the half-yearly Federation meeting in Timaru, and were accorded a vote of thanks. After the business of the meeting the school children entertained their parents and members of the Institute. The school prizes were then presented by the chairman of the school committee, Mr J. C. Faulkner. Afternoon tea was provided for the children and each child received a gift from the Institute. Competitions resulted: Bowl of roses, Miss A, Faulkner 1, Mrs W. J. Fletcher 2, Mrs W. EUCHRE TOURNAMENT There was a large attendance at the euchre and dance held by the Labour Party in the Silver Band Hall on Saturday night. The prize winners vjre: Mr W. Williams 1, Mrs R. Yestberg 2, Mrs Watson 3. Mrs Webster 4, Miss Grylls 5, Mr F. Clear 6. The competition for the lamb was won by Mr Ron Roberts. PERSONAL Mrs Miller and Miss Miller, the school house, Glenavy, are making a motor tour oi the North Island. Mrs E. Berry, and the Misses Berry, of Glenavy, are spending a two months’ holiday in the North Island. They are the guests of Mr and Mrs R. Berry, Taihape. After the morning service at St. Augustine’s Church on Sunday presentations wehe made on behalf of the Sunday Schools to the Rev. A. H. Acheson, who is shortly to leave on a trip to Great Britain and Ireland. Mr Frank Drayton, superintendent of the Sunday School, presented Mr Acheson with a leather book cover, and wished him a pleasant trip and safe return. On behalf of the Cindergarten, Miss Joan Buckingham presented Mr Acheson with a crystal inkstand.
