Duart Castle, which the late Sir Fitzroy Mac Lean restored as a residence in 1912, the consummation of a boyish vow, is situated on the Isle of Mull. The largest of the Hebrides after Lewis and Skye, Mull is separated from the mainland of Argyllshire by the Sound of Mull (19 miles long and one and a half to three and a quarter miles wide. It is 347 square miles in area, and has a maximum length and width of 30 and 29 miles, but is so deeply indented that the coastline cannot be less than 300 miles. Tobermory, founded in 1788, at the head of a sheltered harbour, is the only town. Benmore (3185 feet) is the highest summit on the island. Dr Johnson considered Mackinnon’s Cave, on the island, the greatest natural curiosity he had ever seen. The population of the island is about 4000.
