ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY EEL DRIVE ARRANGED Conditions governing the holding of an eel drive in the Waihao River were determined at a meeting of the Waimate Acclimatisation Society on Thursday, although the date of the drive was left to the president and secretary io decide. It was agreed that the drive be held over a week-end and that the eels be taken only upstream from Ski] ton’s. The president offered a prize of £l/1/- for the most eels taken and the Society decided to give a prize of 10/6 for the heaviest eel. The secretary (Mr J. C. Winning) reported that the North Otago Society had intimated their willingness to cooperate with the Waimate Society m holding a shag drive, and would pay the expenses of a man from Oamaru together with half the costs of transport. It was decided to abandon a drive for the present season. It was agreed to increase the price payable for shag’s heads to 3/-, provided the North Otago and South Canterbury Societies were prepared to do the same.

Messrs Cox and Winning were appointed delegates to the AshburtonSouth Canterbury-Waimate conference.

The president reported that several thousands of fish had been removed from the Waihao, when low. It was agreed to remove fish from the Hunts’ and Waimate Creeks, transferring small fry to the Waihao. The North Canterbury Society wrote submitting prices for the sale of pheasants. It was decided to make no order, but to concentrate on quail. The Department of Internal Affairs forwarded a circular seeking the opinion of the Society on an open season for game next year. It was decided to defer discussion until the January meeting and to ascertain the views of the South Canterbury and North Otago Societies in the meantime. AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION The committee of the Waimate Automobile Association met yesterday. Present: Messrs W. L. Geddes (president) , J. I. Hayman, E. J. Meredith, W. Mcßae, E. H. Englebrecht, C. Dickson, J. Dempsey, T. B. W. Hamilton and Rev. J. Hay. Mrs B. Stace (Arno) and Miss Verity were elected new members.

Hay reported that the depression in the main road complained of by the North Otago Association was immediately south of the railway near Sutdholme.—lt was decided to draw the attention of the CountyCouncil to the matter. VALEDICTORY MR D. W. OFFICER HONOURED Generous tributes to the ability and popularity of Mr D. W. Officer, who for the last 10 years has been on the staff of the Waimate branch of the National Mortgage and Agency Co. were paid at a farewell presentation tendered to him by business associates and friends in the A. and P. rooms yesterday afternoon. Mr Officer, who was recently transferred on promotion to the Oamaru branch of the company, was presented with a wallet of notes. Mr J. Mcßae, president of the A. and P. Association, who presided, said that during his ten years in Waimate Mr Officer had earned the respect of all. He had proved capable and strictly honest in all his dealings and he had never heard a thing reflecting on his character. (Applause). Other speakers were Messrs Matheson, G. McCulloch, A. J. Hoskins, S. I. Fitch, D. Macdonald. M. Mcßae ant J. W. Armstrong. In his reply Mr Officer thanked the speakers for their remarks and said that he had found in the Waimate district a fine type of people to deal with and he regretted leaving them. The chairman took the opportunity of welcoming Mr J. W. Manchester, successor to Mr Officer. PERSONAL ' A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr P. R. Harman was passed at the meeting of the Wai-r-.ate Automobile Association. Trie president said that Mr Harman was one of the foremost figures in the South Island in organised motoring. His sudden death would be deplored by all affiliated associations.

A farewell presentation to Constable W. Voyce, who has been promoted to the charge of the police station at Kurow, was tendered in the police station on Thursday. Sergeant D. Murray, who presided, complimented Constable Voyc r on his promotion, and presented him with a leather suitcase, which he said was accompanied wish the good wishes of all for his future welfare.
