Too close proximity to a wrestling match in the Auckland Town Hall last Monday night often distracted the audience in the adjoining concert chamber from the theme of “Tell Me the Truth,” given by the Auckland Theatrical Stock Company. Judging by the noise of cheering and shouting which penetrated the concert chamber, the wrestling match was apparently crowded with excitement.

Under the baton of Mr Albert Bryant and with Mrs Reg. Reed at the piano, the Auckland Dorian Choir will present “The Black Knight” (Elgar), and “Twelfth Mass’ (Mozart), at its third concert of the season on December 3. The poem of "The Black Knight” relates the coming of a mysterious knight to a castle at which festivities are in progress, and the sudden death, contrived by the visitor, of both the children of the king. The father, in his grief, begs to be taken too; but the grim guest replies, "Roses in the Spring I Gather.”

For some time the Royal Philharmonic Society in Sydney talked of doing Coleridge-Taylor’s “Hiawatha,” with elaborate costumes and stage effects, following the precedent of the yearly performances in the Albert Hall, London. But the society’s finances are not what they might be, and the idea has had to be dropped in favour of a concert version of “Hiawatha.” The pageant may still be given later on, says Mr George Alehin, the honorary secretary of the Philharmonic, optimistically. Meanwhile, for the presentation on Thursday week the society has secured the help of the Royal Sydney Apollo Club, and of the Broadcasting Commission’s orchestra. The soloists will be Mr Lionello Cecil, Miss Thea Philips, and Mr Walter Kingsley.
