The active measure recently taken by the Dunedin City Corporation in disarmament attracted the attention of a visitor to the city. Dr D. M. Sutherland, a former Minister for Defence |in the Government of Canada. Dr i Sutherland spent some time in strolling about the city, and during his walk I he visited the Queen’s Gardens. What I he saw there aroused his curiosity, and : later he asked what was the idea behind the burying of the old guns. On being informed that they were being scrapped, the visitors remarked that Dunedin must lead the world in its zeal in this respect. A great increase in “Week-ending” is likely to be the chief difficulty for the church arising out of the increased leisure brought by new legislation, according to the report of the Social Relationships Committee to the Presbyterian General Assembly. The subversive influence of the practice, the report stated, which taught young people to turn Sunday into a holiday, was already being felt. ‘’Where.” the report asked, “are we to direct our effort here? Into fighting the practice or into following the week-ender to his resort and providing spiritual ministries there? The former is not likely to be very successful and the latter is the statesmanlike thing to do —to take the Gospel where the people are.” To-day at 1.30 p.m. at Wentworth Auction Mart, Messrs Runciman Pryor will offer for public auction furniture of every description, lawn mower, potatoes and tops. An incident resembling Edgar Allan Poe’s story, “A Descent Into the Maelstrom,” was described by Mr A. P. Harper at the Alpine Club in Wellington last week. An Englishman. Colonel Strutt, his wife, and a guide were held up by a flood in the Lansborough, or Haast river, an attempt to cross which, in high flood, would have meant practically certain death. Tire party tried to make its way round Harper's Bluff, a well-known big bluff against the rocky face of which the river washed. The bluff was too much for them, and In a tricky spot the colonel slipped and dropped 30 feet into the river. Instead of being swept out by the raging torrent, he found that he had fallen into a whirlpool created by the river striking the bluff, and was going round and round. His wife, because she was excited, or because she became dizzy with watching her husand’s gyrations, slipped and fell into the whirlpool. The guide was then faced with the unedifying spectacle of seeing both the colonel and his wife going round and round. With great presence of mind, he cut a sapling, and with no little difficulty brought the two to shore. Two years ago some of the wife’s property was found in the lower beach some miles below. It was duly forwarded to Colonel Strutt and his wife, in India.

Shelley) at a social given in his honour in Christchurch. After the applause which greeted this remark had died down, Mr Twyneham went on to explain that only in this way was it possible to inculcate into people an appreciation of the arts and the drama. Only thus could they be taught to distinguish between the tinsel and the gold.

Advertisements inviting applications for positions such as district property supervisors, assistant supervisors and property inspectors give an indication of the steps which are being taken by the State Advances Corporation to cope with a large volume of business. District supervisors are wanted for Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch at salaries of £550 a year, assistants for Christchurch, Auckland Palmerston North, Hamilton. Nelson, Dunedin and Invercargill at £450, and inspectors for Wellington and Napier at £375. The positions advertised represent salaries totalling £5550 a year. A district property supervisor is required to make or check city, urban and suburban valuations for loan purposes. to examine plans and specifications, supervise repair and reinstatement work in respect of properties, prepare or examine plans connected therewith, and to direct the Department's field officers. The duties of assistant supervisors follow in general on similar lines, with the exception of the direction of field officers. Property inspectors must have a practical knowledge of the building trade and the preparation of specifications and estimates and be able to supervise repair or maintenance work on buildings.
