BENEFIT CONCERT The South Canterbury Women’s Glee Club and the Timaru Readers gave an entertainment in the Public Hall on Wednesday in aid of the Anglican Ladies’ Guild. The stage presented an attractive appearance, being decorated with roses, foxglove and lupins. The Rev. J. Hay introduced the visitors, after which the programme was presented as follows:—Glees, “The Vesper Hymn” and “Beautious Morn,” South Canterbury Women’s Club; vocal solos, “The Rain” and “The Sand Man,” Miss Betty Holgate; pianoforte duet, Mrs and Miss Mangos; vocal solos, “Melisande” and “My Ships,” Mrs Mclnnis; vocal solos, “Sing Joyous Bird” and “My Heart is Sad,” Mrs Waters; recitations, “The Highway Man” and a humorous interpretation, Miss Barbara Mclnnis; vocal solos, “Spring Time” and “Once There Was a Baby,” Miss Audrey Holdgate; glees, “Flower Greeting” and “O Who Will O’er the Downs,” Women’s Glee Club. The accompanists were Miss Marion Hay and Mrs Mangos.

A play, entitled “The Twentieth Century Lullaby,” was presented by the Timaru Readers. The cast was: The mother, Mrs D. Unwin; schoolmaster, Mr D. Unwin; business man, Mr G. H. R. Ulrich; bride, Miss Westmacott; clergyman, Dr. W. H. Unwin; politician, Dr. F. A. Ulrich; announcer, Mr W. T. Ritchie; madonna, Mrs R. D. King. The members of the Women’s Glee Club present were —Mrs Mangos, Mrs Rule, Mrs King, Mrs Holdgate, Mrs Mclnnis, Mrs Waters, Misses Bernadette Mangos, Betty and Audrey Holdgate, Marion Hay, Barbara Mclnnis, I. Oliver, Ann Gabites, Hazel Rule. At the conclusion of the concert the Rev. J. Hay, on behalf of the Ladies Guild, thanked Mrs Mangos, Mrs Rule and the performers for the excellent programme. Mr Desmond Unwin replied on behalf of the concert party. After supper had been handed round the hall was cleared, and dancing was enjoyed till the early hours. Mr L. Allan was M.C. Christmas presents were sold at stalls in charge of the Ladies’ Guild. A Christmas cake was won by Mr Oswald Davey. PERSONAL Miss Kathleen Midgley, Springbrook, has returned home after a visit to Christchurch.
