WALKER AND HALL SHIELD In probably the most exciting hockey match witnessed in Timaru this season, South End retained the Walker and Hall shield, defeating Baring Square, the winners of the Ashburton competition, by five goals to three in the final. South End have now won four of the six finals since the shield was given for competition. Ashburton were unfortunate in not carrying off the shield, for throughout they played a superi.r game, their positional play being a feature of the match. The game at time was three all, and the teams elected to continue for two further spells. South End fought gamely throughout, but the score in the latter stages gives little indication of the strength of the teams. Goals were netted for South End by E. Hawkey (3) and M. O’Connor (2), while for Baring Square, K. Fowke netted twice and W. Corbett once.
