GERALDINE RACES

SUCCESSFUL OPENING DAY MONIPERE WINS CUP Success in almost every particular marked the opening day of the Geraldine Racing Club's annual meeting at Orari yesterday. The weather was almost perfect, the afternoon being warm and nearly calm, and the attendance appeared to be above the average. It is doubtful if the track has ever been in better condition, and the racing was of an unusually interesting nature. A running description of each event was amplified through loud-speakers, and the innovation seemed to be a popular one. The investments, on the singlepool system, totalled £9076, compared with £7268 on the first day of last year’s meeting. The race for the time-honoured Geraldine Cup was won by the West Coaster Monipere, after a great battle up the straight with Davolo. After the contest the trophy accompanying the winner’s share of the stake was presented by Miss Grant (daughter of the Club’s president) to Monipere’s owner, Mr W. Jeffries (now of Hokitika, but a former resident of Temuka), to the accompaniment of much applause. A feature of the racing was the success of Bay Duke and Wild Career, the two Riverton representatives who gained the easiest victories of the day. All other events furnished close contests. the finish in the Belfield Handicap, the concluding race, being a blanket one, and the two trots were very spectacular. Taken as a whole, the racing was as good as any seen at Orari for many years, and it went off without hitch or accident of any kind.

The president of the Club, Mr L. J. Grant extended cordial congratulations to Mr W. Jeffries on winning the cup, and also commended W. Hibberd, the jockey, on his performance. Amidst applause Miss Grant presented Mr Jeffries with the silver cup, and the rider Hibberd with a riding whip. In acknowledging the presentation and congratulations, Mr Jeffries congratulated the Club on the success of the meeting, and remarked that West Coast owners were well pleased with the way they were treated by the officials. Hearty cheers concluded the presentation. Selections were given by the Geraldine District Band, under the baton of the conductor, Mr E. Undrill.
